The Conference will feature presentations by world-renowned writers and daily workshops where students will join with peers and teachers to share in the creative writing experience.

Students registering for the conference will select a genre of choice – fiction, poetry, journalism, or children’s literature – on which will be their focus throughout the four days. Each day will begin with a presentation by the author of the day, who will discuss his or her writing process, perhaps read from the students works and answer questions from the students and staff.

Following the presentations, students will break out into their particular genre writing groups, working with a teacher who will guide them in developing their own ideas about creative writing and their own written pieces. But the real winner was Hackettstown Regional Medical Center’s Joan Knechel Cancer Center.

Despite a chilly day at the International Trade Center, hundreds of participants turned out for the Leprechaun Leap 5K race and helped to raise $2,000 for the Joan Knechel Cancer Center. The International Trade Center Alliance (ITCA) together with the Mount Olive Mayor's Wellness Council hosted this year’s 5k race in Mount Olive, New Jersey.

Tom Quigley, Business Development Manager for Picatinny Federal Credit Union, was elated with the turnout of 462 racers.

“It was a great day all around. It may not have been picture-perfect weather but the runners showed perseverance in giving it their all for such an important cause" noted Tom Quigley. "I know that Picatinny Federal Credit Union is truly proud to be part of this event. In fact, more than 50 percent of our employees volunteered their time to help out. You can’t say enough about the people who work for us. They are community-minded.”

Mark Bahnuk finished the 5k race first in a time of 5:06, 10 seconds better than he did last year. Bahnuk finished just ahead of 15-year old Nicholas Salek of Morris Plains. Budd Lake’s Mark Lorello was third. Glenn Oakley of Blairstown and Jon Harper of Phillipsburg, respectively, finished fourth and fifth.

On the female side, Christine Scheuch of Vernon was first, followed by 12-year old Katlyn Rohsler of Fredon. Laura Furfaro was third, Joelle Fair took fourth, while Mary Sullivan of Succasunna finished fifth.

Mount Olive Township residents now can access the complete Agenda, which lists all items in PDF for ease of viewing and printing if necessary. The information will be available after the close of business on the Friday prior to scheduled Council meetings.

“The residents just go to the website, click under Mayor & Council, then go to Township Council, then meeting date and click to open the Agendas.” said Ray Perkins, Council President, “This provides everyone with adequate time to read correspondence, Resolutions, Ordinances, bill list and minutes prior to coming to the Municipal Building for the meeting.”

“It also has the added advantage of permitting those who cannot attend Council meetings the opportunity to see what is taking place and contact us with questions or comments.” noted Perkins.

A bit'o legend 'bout ole Saint Pat
As the story is told, St. Patrick is believed to have banished snakes from the Isle of Ireland. However, there is no scientific evidence that post-glacial wildlife on Ireland ever actually including snakes.

One suggestion on the myth explains that Druids had become popularly known as The Serpents of Wisdom, using a symbol of a serpent or 'snake' like figure.

During Saint Patrick's years as a missionary, he was extremely influential among the Celtic people. It is believed he personally baptized as many as 120,000 Irishmen.

As the story was passed down from generation to generation the tale may have arisen as a metaphor of his single-handed effort in converting the Celtic people to Christianity.

Author Feather Schwartz Foster to speak at the Chester Library

LADIES: A Conjecture of Personalities written by Feather Schwartz Foster
CHESTER, NEW JERSEY – Feather Schwartz Foster, author of “LADIES: A Conjecture of Personalities” is scheduled to speak at the Chester Library to discuss some of America's First Ladies, why they were “new”, and what prompted change.

Foster will be appearing at the Chester Library, Main Street, Chester, New Jersey at 7:00pm, Tuesday, March 5th. The program is free of charge, and a book signing will follow.

According to the author, “A decade after the Civil War saw women less as the wispy, languishing types of the ante-bellum years, and becoming more like the strong, athletic figures typified by the ‘Gibson Girl..’ Education for women had become mainstream, employment opportunities were opening up, and, no surprise, women actually wanted to learn and to work and to achieve.”

Ladies: A Conjecture of Personalities is a book of voices. In it, First Ladies between Martha Washington and Mamie Eisenhower tell their own stories – or, to be more exact, whatever they want – in their own words and in their own styles. It crosses boundaries between fact, conjecture and, most importantly, centuries. Through dialogue-boxes, the Ladies talk to each other across Eternity, where anything is possible. The Modern First Ladies, from Mrs. Kennedy through Mrs. Clinton participate in commentary. “The old gals talk to the reader and they talk amongst themselves. They talk about their husbands, and their children, and the White House, and the times they lived in. And, of course, politics." said Foster.

It is an entertainment, not a tome. “Of course ‘LADIES….’ Is a work of fiction,” says Foster. “After all, it is truly a conjecture of their personalities. But it is all based on the facts of their lives, the lives of their husbands and the times they lived in. Most biographies of First Ladies are dull – full of ‘almanac stuff.’ This books livens things up – especially when the Ladies cross the centuries through Eternity and talk to each other.”

Author Feather Schwartz Foster has been an “amateur” presidential historian for three decades. Following a long career in advertising and having written a score of children’s musical shows, she has decided to draw on her thousand-volume personal presidential library and her love of history by penning “LADIES: A Conjecture of Personalities”.

Her second novel, “Garfield’s Train” was recently published and deals with President James Garfield’s death in Long Branch, in 1881. A children’s book, “T: An Auto-Biography” about a Model-T Ford was also recently released.

Author/lecturer Feather Schwartz Foster has made more than 200 presentations about the “old” First Ladies to various groups throughout the state of New Jersey.
