First Annual Tom Wear Memorial Swim

LAKE HOPATCONG, NEW JERSEY - On Sunday, September 27, 2009, Lake Hopatcong will be hosting the First Annual Tom Wear Memorial Swim, a one-mile open-water race sanctioned by New Jersey LMSC for U.S. Masters Swimming. This race benefits the Jefferson Township Animal Shelter, a municipal animal rescue organization serving the residents (furry and otherwise) of Jefferson Township, New Jersey. Competitors from New Jersey and the Northeastern United States are expected to participate in what will be an exciting race on New Jersey’s largest lake.

This race is in honor of Tom Wear, well-known local Lake Hopatcong businessman and owner of the Wearhouse Grille and Prospect Point Marina and Boat Yard, who passed away in 2008. All proceeds from the race benefit the Jefferson Township Animal Rescue. This is the first year this event is being held on Lake Hopatcong and over one hundred athletes from the Northeastern United States as well as local athletes are expected to participate.

"I’m honored to host this inaugural event on Lake Hopatcong," says Bridgette Hobart, organizer of the event. "The Masters Swimming organizations and their community offered tremendous support and guidance, as have the Marine Police and Coast Guard on Lake Hopatcong. With the added support of local residents and businesses, our goal is to demonstrate to swimmers and spectators that Lake Hopatcong is not only one of the recreational jewels of New Jersey, but a terrific place to visit and host competitive events year after year."

Pre-registration is $20.00 until September 1, 2009 and will increase as the race gets closer, with final registration peaking at $30.00 on race day. Registration opens at 7:30am on race day and races start at 9:00am. Medals will be awarded for Masters and Open divisions based on age-related men’s and women’s groups. Sponsorships and volunteer opportunities are available. All racers and volunteers will also receive a free t-shirt.

Morris County Start! Heart Walk (5K)

MORRIS COUNTY, NEW JERSEY - The American Heart Association is seeking volunteers to assist with the Morris County Start! Heart Walk and Fun Run (5K), scheduled for Sunday, October 11 at the Mack-Cali Business Campus in Parsippany, New Jersey from 8am to 1pm. Volunteer opportunities are numerous and include assisting in the “Kid Zone,” passing out refreshments and water, aiding in registration, serving as a performer or entertainer for the crowd.

Christ Church Budd Lake Multi-Family Yard Sale

BUDD LAKE, NEW JERSEY - Christ Church Budd Lake will be hosting its Third Annual Multi-Family Yard Sale on Saturday, September 12th 2009 .

Artie Lange at Newark Bears Stadium

New Jersey native Artie Lange of The Howard Stern Show and co-author of the #1 New York Times Best Selling book "Too Fat to Fish" threw out the ceremonial first pitch at the Newark Bears game against the Camden Riversharks at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium on August 18th.

The Camden Riversharks defeated the Newark Bears 6-5 last Tuesday night, but lost to the Bears 10-8 on Wednesday afternoon.

The Newark Bears, led by World Series-winning manager Tim Raines and former major leaguers Carl Everett and Armando Benitez, are vying for first place in the Atlantic League. Game Schedule

Palma, Christian take top prizes at ITCA Leprechaun Leap

MOUNT OLIVE TOWNSHIP, NEW JERSEY - Over 350 runners competed in this year's ITCA Annual Leprechaun Leap at the International Trade Center, many of whom competed last year. But when it was over this time, the top finishers were a whole new crew.

Despite some heat from a handful of competitors, Lou Palma of Clinton, 27, was the overall champion, taking first in 16:31.3, ahead of 15-year old Joseph Presetifilipp of Hopatcong and Peter Kashulines, 45, of Mountain Lakes. Scott Chamberlin of Allamuchy Township, another 15-year old, came in fourth, just ahead of last year's winner, Mark Bahnuk of Hackettstown, 26, who was fifth.

Mary Christian(pictured right) of Flanders won the women's end of it, finishing in 19:06.3. She was trailed by Janine Neill of Andover, Alison Jeffs from Chester, and Bailey Ott of Pompton Lakes. Last year's female winner, Christine Scheuch, like her male counterpart winner last year, came in fifth place. Ott, at 15, was the youngest finisher on the female side.

The 12th Annual Leprechaun Leap 5K, sponsored by Picatinny Federal Credit Union and held on March 22nd, featured runners from throughout the region, many of whom wore "green" in post St. Patrick's Day honor. Proceeds from the charity race will be going to the Unit Fellowship Fund, which supports families of Morris County soldiers who are deployed overseas.

"We are thrilled to have the proceeds go to such an important group of people," said Tom Quigley, Business Development Manager for Picatinny Federal Credit Union. "Life is tough enough on these families and if we can help ease the strain even a little bit it goes a long ways in making things better."

Rounding out the Top 10 for the men were Zachary Miller, Budd Lake, Glen Oakley of Blairstown, Antonio Massa, Denville, Kevin Mulvihill, Long Valley, and Ryan Fischlein, Succasunna.

Finishing out the Top 10 for the women were Nirmala Alcapeddt, Randolph, Andrea Lovas, Oxford, Sarah Masukewicz, Flanders, Kristen Girondi, Hamburg, and Wendy Kerr, Hawthorne.

The race was presented in partnership between the ITCA and the Mount Olive Mayor's Wellness Council. The goal of the Mayors Wellness Council is to increase opportunities for New Jersey residents to participate in daily physical activity with a long-term goal of reducing personal and health care costs secondary to obesity.

Holocaust Memorial at Temple HaTikvah

FLANDERS, NEW JERSEY - Temple HaTikvah of Flanders will be observing Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Memorial Day through traditional prayers, readings and reflection honoring the memory of the Six Million and affirming the continuity of Jewish life. The theme this year will be an exploration through discussion of Affirmation and Rebellion: Faith After the Holocaust.
