Annual Clean Up for Mount Olive Township residential property owners

Large item cleanup will begin on April 22nd through April 26th, 2013

Three large items will be picked up on your regular scheduled solid waste pickup day during this week. See town calendar for more details.

What you need to know:

• Place ACCEPTABLE household item curb side by 5:00 a.m. on your scheduled pick up day. (Do not place item out more than one day prior to collection.)
• If we are unable to collect this material on the day scheduled due to weather or equipment problems, we will pick them up the following day. There is no need to call our office.
• Review the following list of acceptable items to determine eligibility for pick-up.

Acceptable Items
All furniture (such as): sofa, loveseat, kitchen table and miscellaneous small pieces. Mattresses/box springs, carpet (cut and tied), small toys bagged or large toys, metal sheds (cut and tied), barbeque grills, disassembled swing sets, and/or metal railings.
*METAL ITEMS:
*Washers, dryers, stoves, hot water heaters, Dishwashers, riding mowers, lawn mowers.

Unacceptable Items
Televisions , Explosives, radioactive materials, all appliances and metal goods such as refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, oil/propane tanks, tires/rims, leaves, brush, grass, concrete, asphalt, bricks, dirt, paints, construction materials, computers, printers, and/or hazardous materials.

Mount Olive Township Well Water Testing

-a message from Mayor Rob Greenbaum

Mt. Olive Township residents can have their well water tested for commonly occurring bacteria, nitrates and other contaminants. The Township Environmental Commission and the Raritan Headwaters Association (RHA) are sponsoring reduced-cost well tests. A basic test for coliform bacteria and nitrates costs $60. Other testing options are available for additional costs. The well-testing kits contain easy-to-follow instructions. Kits may be purchased on Saturday, April 27 and Sunday, April 28 at the Municipal Building between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon.

Payment is by check only, made out to RHA. The water samples must be dropped off on Monday, April 29 at the Municipal Building between 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m.

Leaves must be placed out for collection in brown paper biodegradable waste bags only for pick-up. Leaves in plastic bags will not be taken. Raking, blowing, or otherwise depositing leaves into the public streets is not permitted by the town.

Mount Olive NJ Election Results

MOUNT OLIVE TOWNSHIP, NEW JERSEY - Election results are in. Nearly 24,557 Mount Olive residents voted today in favor of incumbents Rob Greenbaum and Ray Perkins along with newcomers John Mania and Partick Walsh.

Both Greenbaum and Perkins won a third term with 4,144 and 4,098 votes. John Mania, a longtime planning board member recently appointed to council, was voted in with 4,171 votes while Pat Walsh won with 4,093 votes.

Democrats James Buell, Richard Escobar, Gary Mahabir and John Titus received the following votes: Buell 2,164; Escobar 2,081; Mahabir 1,883 and Titus 1,903.

3,941 Mount Olive residents were in favor of merging the Planning Board and Zoning Board, while 1,712 opposed. Mount Olive Township officials estimate the merge will save taxpayers roughly $30,000 next year through the elimination of an attorney and part-time worker.

All Veterans Memorial's Final Phase

MOUNT OLIVE, TOWNSHIP - The All Veterans Memorial's final phase, the Path to Enduring Freedom handicap walkway and Veterans dedication, is slated at 2 pm. on November 15th at Turkey Brook Park. The date ends a week long observance and appreciation to those who served in the United States Armed Forces.

Mayor David Scapicchio and the staff members of the All Veterans Memorial(AVM) invite all Mount Olive and surrounding area organizations to demonstrate their support on November 15th by assembling in uniform along the loop of Turkey Brook Park 45 minutes before the dedication ceremony begins. "The goal is to create a canopy of Patriots along the park entrance and loop before veterans and family members arrive" said Charlie Wood Uhrmann, the event organizer.

Each participant will receive a 16-inch by 18-inch American flag and a 3-foot by 5-foot flag per organization. The larger flag will be available for a $10 purchase.

"The All Veterans Memorial not only represents Mount Olive's steadfast patriotism, but our ability to unite as a community when the need arises." said Uhrmann "Every one's participation is paramount."

ABOUT THE ALL VETERANS MEMORIAL
The All Veterans Memorial is a unique, living memorial which has become representative of a state-wide effort demonstrating the great American principle of Unity of the People. It will be constructed in Mount Olive, New Jersey in 2007, and will honor ALL who proudly served in the United States Military during both war and peacetime. It will provide visitors with a solemn place to reflect, a place which shall include a regal ceremonial ground, a uniquely designed flag burning vault, an educational preamble stage, commemorative time-capsules, and a new home for the Veterans Memorial Monument. Together, these elements denote the All Veterans Memorial as the second of its kind in the nation.

Mount Olive Township H1N1 Swine Flu

MOUNT OLIVE TOWNSHIP, NEW JERSEY - As Limited Amounts of H1N1 Vaccine are received by the Mount Olive Township Health Department, the department will be scheduling clinics for the groups at higher risk for complications from novel H1N1 Influenza.

Targeting healthy children and young adults 2–24 years of age, the first H1N1 Nasal Spray Vaccination clinic for the community will be held on October 29, 2009 from 4-7pm at the Senior Center. The vaccine will be offered on a first come basis as there is a limited amount. Please pre register for this clinic by calling the health department at (973)691-0900 x 7330.

This is a live attenuated vaccine is approved for people from 2 through 49 years of age who are not pregnant and do not have certain health conditions, asthma, heart, lung, kidney, liver disease, weakened immune system or allergic to eggs. The vaccine virus is attenuated (weakened) so it will not cause illness.

We ask that residents continue to remain patient as we wait for more vaccine. The health department has placed their order and is just awaiting delivery. There will be more clinics scheduled by the end of October, early November. Fortunately, there is still low influenza activity in Morris County.

Signs of H1N1 can include fever, cough, sore throat, fatigue, muscle aches, chills and sneezing. Most people feel better within a week although some people do develop pneumonia or other complications. If you have symptoms of influenza call your health care provider for the best medical guidance for you and your family.

To prevent the spread of illness and reduce the risk of getting sick the Mount Olive Health Department continues to recommend:
1. Washing your hands with soap and water thoroughly and frequently
2. Covering coughs and sneezes
3. Staying home when you are sick until the fever is gone for 24 hours
without taking fever reducing medications.

Free Rabies Clinic Mount Olive Township

MOUNT OLIVE TOWNSHIP, NEW JERSEY - The Mount Olive Township Health Department will hold its annual free rabies clinic on October 23rd,2009 at Tractor Supply on Route 206, Flanders from 5pm-8pm.

GM spares Mount Olive NJ dealership

MOUNT OLIVE, NEW JERSEY - Callaremi Buick Pontiac, GMC and Cadillac on Route 46 was scheduled to be shut down as part of General Motors’ reorganization plan in January of 2010.

After an outcry from local residents, intense lobbying from the owner Michael Callaremi and his family, and support from Sen. Frank Lautenberg and Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen, GM has decided to reinstate the a family-run car dealership.

A 'Many Thanks' celebration will be held at the dealership from 10 am to 4 pm on Saturday, October 24th.

MOUNT OLIVE TOWNSHIP, NEW JERSEY - The Mount Olive Township Recreation Department held it's 1st Annual Spring Photo Contest celebrating what makes Mount Olive Township a Great Place to Live, Work and Play!

The 1st Place, Best Over-all award winner is Jon Carmody, who entered as an Amateur Adult in the category Outdoors: Landscapes, Wildlife, Nature. Carmody won a $100.00 cash prize donated by Flanders Veterinary Clinic and of course, bragging rights.



The following winners were honored during a reception at the Chili's of Mount Olive...

• Best Amateur Adult Andrew Palmieri – $50 gift certificate to Kennedy’s Pub.
• Runner Up Amateur Adult Alan DiBenedetto – $25 gift certificate to Chili’s Grill & Bar.

Flu shots offered on October 3rd in Mount Olive

MOUNT OLIVE TOWNSHIP, NEW JERSEY - Flu shots will be offered to all Mount Olive Township residents from 1 to 4pm on Saturday, October 3rd, 2009 at the Mount Olive Senior Center.

Seniors 65 or older are free with a Medicare card(Must have it with you). People with the HMO Medicare plan, should go to your regular doctor for this season's flu shot.

The fee is $15 for all other residents.

Congressman Rodney Frelinghuysen comes to Mount Olive

MOUNT OLIVE, NEW JERSEY - Congressman Rodney Frelinghuysen, representing New Jersey's 11th District, will hold a “Town Meeting” at the Mount Olive Middle School (located on Wolfe Road, Budd Lake) in the auditorium on Saturday, October 3rd, 2009 at 9am.

The meeting will be an opportunity for Congressman Frelinghuysen to discuss the key issues he is working on in Congress, while also giving attendees a chance to address their individual concerns. Palma, Christian take top prizes at ITCA Leprechaun Leap

MOUNT OLIVE TOWNSHIP, NEW JERSEY - Over 350 runners competed in this year's ITCA Annual Leprechaun Leap at the International Trade Center, many of whom competed last year. But when it was over this time, the top finishers were a whole new crew.

Despite some heat from a handful of competitors, Lou Palma of Clinton, 27, was the overall champion, taking first in 16:31.3, ahead of 15-year old Joseph Presetifilipp of Hopatcong and Peter Kashulines, 45, of Mountain Lakes. Scott Chamberlin of Allamuchy Township, another 15-year old, came in fourth, just ahead of last year's winner, Mark Bahnuk of Hackettstown, 26, who was fifth.

Mary Christian(pictured right) of Flanders won the women's end of it, finishing in 19:06.3. She was trailed by Janine Neill of Andover, Alison Jeffs from Chester, and Bailey Ott of Pompton Lakes. Last year's female winner, Christine Scheuch, like her male counterpart winner last year, came in fifth place. Ott, at 15, was the youngest finisher on the female side.

The 12th Annual Leprechaun Leap 5K, sponsored by Picatinny Federal Credit Union and held on March 22nd, featured runners from throughout the region, many of whom wore "green" in post St. Patrick's Day honor. Proceeds from the charity race will be going to the Unit Fellowship Fund, which supports families of Morris County soldiers who are deployed overseas.

"We are thrilled to have the proceeds go to such an important group of people," said Tom Quigley, Business Development Manager for Picatinny Federal Credit Union. "Life is tough enough on these families and if we can help ease the strain even a little bit it goes a long ways in making things better."

Rounding out the Top 10 for the men were Zachary Miller, Budd Lake, Glen Oakley of Blairstown, Antonio Massa, Denville, Kevin Mulvihill, Long Valley, and Ryan Fischlein, Succasunna.

Finishing out the Top 10 for the women were Nirmala Alcapeddt, Randolph, Andrea Lovas, Oxford, Sarah Masukewicz, Flanders, Kristen Girondi, Hamburg, and Wendy Kerr, Hawthorne.

The race was presented in partnership between the ITCA and the Mount Olive Mayor's Wellness Council. The goal of the Mayors Wellness Council is to increase opportunities for New Jersey residents to participate in daily physical activity with a long-term goal of reducing personal and health care costs secondary to obesity.

Holocaust Memorial at Temple HaTikvah

FLANDERS, NEW JERSEY - Temple HaTikvah of Flanders will be observing Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Memorial Day through traditional prayers, readings and reflection honoring the memory of the Six Million and affirming the continuity of Jewish life. The theme this year will be an exploration through discussion of Affirmation and Rebellion: Faith After the Holocaust. Mt Olive Recreation Winter Photo Contest Winner

MOUNT OLIVE TOWNSHIP, NEW JERSEY - The Mount Olive Township Recreation Department held it's 1st Annual Winter Photo Contest celebrating what makes Mount Olive Township a Great Place to Live, Work and Play!

The 1st Place, Best Over-all award winner is Kristina Ailara, who entered as an Amateur Adult with her photo titled 'Berries at Turkey Brook Park'. Besides bragging rights, Ailara won a prize packet valued at $100 with donations from Branda's Italian Grill, The Market Place & Instant Imprints.

The winners, who were honored at a reception at the Mount Olive Bar and Grill, also included Linda Spaet, Best Amateur Adult Award; Paul C. Pomel, Amateur Adult Runner Up; and Timothy Maio, Best 18 & Under.
