MOUNT OLIVE TOWNSHIP, NEW JERSEY - Election results are in. Nearly 24,557 Mount Olive residents voted today in favor of incumbents Rob Greenbaum and Ray Perkins along with newcomers John Mania and Partick Walsh.

Both Greenbaum and Perkins won a third term with 4,144 and 4,098 votes. John Mania, a longtime planning board member recently appointed to council, was voted in with 4,171 votes while Pat Walsh won with 4,093 votes.

Democrats James Buell, Richard Escobar, Gary Mahabir and John Titus received the following votes: Buell 2,164; Escobar 2,081; Mahabir 1,883 and Titus 1,903.

3,941 Mount Olive residents were in favor of merging the Planning Board and Zoning Board, while 1,712 opposed. Mount Olive Township officials estimate the merge will save taxpayers roughly $30,000 next year through the elimination of an attorney and part-time worker.

All Veterans Memorial's Final Phase

MOUNT OLIVE, TOWNSHIP - The All Veterans Memorial's final phase, the Path to Enduring Freedom handicap walkway and Veterans dedication, is slated at 2 pm. on November 15th at Turkey Brook Park. The date ends a week long observance and appreciation to those who served in the United States Armed Forces.

Mayor David Scapicchio and the staff members of the All Veterans Memorial(AVM) invite all Mount Olive and surrounding area organizations to demonstrate their support on November 15th by assembling in uniform along the loop of Turkey Brook Park 45 minutes before the dedication ceremony begins. "The goal is to create a canopy of Patriots along the park entrance and loop before veterans and family members arrive" said Charlie Wood Uhrmann, the event organizer.

Each participant will receive a 16-inch by 18-inch American flag and a 3-foot by 5-foot flag per organization. The larger flag will be available for a $10 purchase.

"The All Veterans Memorial not only represents Mount Olive's steadfast patriotism, but our ability to unite as a community when the need arises." said Uhrmann "Every one's participation is paramount."

MOUNT OLIVE TOWNSHIP, NEW JERSEY - As Limited Amounts of H1N1 Vaccine are received by the Mount Olive Township Health Department, the department will be scheduling clinics for the groups at higher risk for complications from novel H1N1 Influenza.

Targeting healthy children and young adults 2–24 years of age, the first H1N1 Nasal Spray Vaccination clinic for the community will be held on October 29, 2009 from 4-7pm at the Senior Center. The vaccine will be offered on a first come basis as there is a limited amount. Please pre register for this clinic by calling the health department at (973)691-0900 x 7330.

This is a live attenuated vaccine is approved for people from 2 through 49 years of age who are not pregnant and do not have certain health conditions, asthma, heart, lung, kidney, liver disease, weakened immune system or allergic to eggs. The vaccine virus is attenuated (weakened) so it will not cause illness.

We ask that residents continue to remain patient as we wait for more vaccine. The health department has placed their order and is just awaiting delivery. There will be more clinics scheduled by the end of October, early November. Fortunately, there is still low influenza activity in Morris County.

Signs of H1N1 can include fever, cough, sore throat, fatigue, muscle aches, chills and sneezing. Most people feel better within a week although some people do develop pneumonia or other complications. If you have symptoms of influenza call your health care provider for the best medical guidance for you and your family.

To prevent the spread of illness and reduce the risk of getting sick the Mount Olive Health Department continues to recommend:
1. Washing your hands with soap and water thoroughly and frequently
2. Covering coughs and sneezes
3. Staying home when you are sick until the fever is gone for 24 hours
without taking fever reducing medications.

GM spares Mount Olive NJ dealership

MOUNT OLIVE, NEW JERSEY - Callaremi Buick Pontiac, GMC and Cadillac on Route 46 was scheduled to be shut down as part of General Motors’ reorganization plan in January of 2010.

After an outcry from local residents, intense lobbying from the owner Michael Callaremi and his family, and support from Sen. Frank Lautenberg and Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen, GM has decided to reinstate the a family-run car dealership.

A 'Many Thanks' celebration will be held at the dealership from 10 am to 4 pm on Saturday, October 24th.

The 1st Place, Best Over-all award winner is Jon Carmody, who entered as an Amateur Adult in the category Outdoors: Landscapes, Wildlife, Nature. Carmody won a $100.00 cash prize donated by Flanders Veterinary Clinic and of course, bragging rights.

Morris County Fungus Fest 2009

MORRISTOWN, NEW JERSEY - 2009 has been one of the wettest years on record, and mushrooms of all shapes and colors are springing up everywhere. What, exactly, is a mushroom? What are these “things” growing in my lawn? Are they poisonous? Are they edible? Are my pets safe if they eat them? What good are mushrooms, anyway?

Answers to these and other questions about mushrooms will be found at the 2009 Fungus Fest, presented by the New Jersey Mycological Association(NJMA) on Sunday, September 27th at the Frelinghuysen Arboretum from 10:00am to 4:00pm. The Frelinghuysen Arboretum is located at 53 East Hanover Avenue in Morristown, New Jersey.

Fungus Fest is what one might call a giant "science fair of mushrooms" It includes extensive exhibits of mushrooms, mushroom art and photography, guided outdoor mushroom walks with NJMA experts, edible and poisonous mushroom information, how-to's on mushroom cultivation and mushroom cooking, talks and presentations for beginners, medicinal uses of mushrooms, and even demonstrations of crafts like papermaking and fabric dyeing using mushrooms. Attendees are invited to bring their own mushroom specimens for identification by our fungi experts.

In addition to the activities, mushroom books, field guides, and mushroom crafts will be available for purchase.

Fungus Fest is free and open to the public, with a suggested donation of $2.00 for adults and $1.00 for children under 16.

Share a Ride - Earn & Save Money

TransOptions, the non-profit Transportation Management Association, is encouraging commuters to consider sharing a ride as they return to work and school commuting routines this fall. A free, computerized, rideshare matching program implemented by TransOptions helps connect travelers with others having similar commutes to northwestern New Jersey.

Commuters interested in giving up their solo ride to work, even a few days a week, complete a confidential application online at www.TransOptions.org. They are contacted in approximately one week to learn of potential rideshare companions.

Carpooling and vanpooling are the most popular rideshare options and offer multiple commuting benefits. Sharing a ride enables commuters to save on the cost of fuel, which lowers their commuting costs.

Carpools require a minimum of only two people who decide how many days per week to rideshare and who does the driving. By completing 24 round trips in 60 days, carpools registered with TransOptions are eligible to earn a free gas card, up to $200 for a maximum of four or more riders, from the Carpooling Makes Sense incentive program sponsored by the NJ Department of Transportation.

Vanpools are another cost-saving rideshare option, ideal for groups of five to fifteen riders with a longer commute. The group leases their van on a month-to-month basis, sharing gas, tolls and operating costs. In addition, NJ TRANSIT offers a monthly sponsorship to qualifying vanpools, further reducing their cost of commuting.

TransOptions estimates that the annual cost of a 60 mile roundtrip solo commute is approximately $8,250. A two person carpool reduces the annual estimated cost by 50% to approximately $4,125. A seven passenger vanpool further reduces annual commuting costs to approximately $2,640. (Savings are approximate, based on a five day commute per week for 50 weeks per hear, incorporating operating costs for gas and maintenance at the Internal Revenue Service allowance of $.55 per mile which includes depreciation, insurance, fuel and all other estimated costs of owning a card.)

Vehicle wear and tear are reduced along with the stress associated with a solo drive to work. The environment also benefits since fewer cars on the road improves air quality by reducing traffic congestion.

First Annual Tom Wear Memorial Swim

LAKE HOPATCONG, NEW JERSEY - On Sunday, September 27, 2009, Lake Hopatcong will be hosting the First Annual Tom Wear Memorial Swim, a one-mile open-water race sanctioned by New Jersey LMSC for U.S. Masters Swimming. This race benefits the Jefferson Township Animal Shelter, a municipal animal rescue organization serving the residents (furry and otherwise) of Jefferson Township, New Jersey. Competitors from New Jersey and the Northeastern United States are expected to participate in what will be an exciting race on New Jersey’s largest lake.

This race is in honor of Tom Wear, well-known local Lake Hopatcong businessman and owner of the Wearhouse Grille and Prospect Point Marina and Boat Yard, who passed away in 2008. All proceeds from the race benefit the Jefferson Township Animal Rescue. This is the first year this event is being held on Lake Hopatcong and over one hundred athletes from the Northeastern United States as well as local athletes are expected to participate.

"I’m honored to host this inaugural event on Lake Hopatcong," says Bridgette Hobart, organizer of the event. "The Masters Swimming organizations and their community offered tremendous support and guidance, as have the Marine Police and Coast Guard on Lake Hopatcong. With the added support of local residents and businesses, our goal is to demonstrate to swimmers and spectators that Lake Hopatcong is not only one of the recreational jewels of New Jersey, but a terrific place to visit and host competitive events year after year."

Pre-registration is $20.00 until September 1, 2009 and will increase as the race gets closer, with final registration peaking at $30.00 on race day. Registration opens at 7:30am on race day and races start at 9:00am. Medals will be awarded for Masters and Open divisions based on age-related men’s and women’s groups. New Jersey native Artie Lange of The Howard Stern Show and co-author of the #1 New York Times Best Selling book "Too Fat to Fish" threw out the ceremonial first pitch at the Newark Bears game against the Camden Riversharks at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium on August 18th.

The Camden Riversharks defeated the Newark Bears 6-5 last Tuesday night, but lost to the Bears 10-8 on Wednesday afternoon.

Palma, Christian take top prizes at ITCA Leprechaun Leap

MOUNT OLIVE TOWNSHIP, NEW JERSEY - Over 350 runners competed in this year's ITCA Annual Leprechaun Leap at the International Trade Center, many of whom competed last year. But when it was over this time, the top finishers were a whole new crew.

Despite some heat from a handful of competitors, Lou Palma of Clinton, 27, was the overall champion, taking first in 16:31.3, ahead of 15-year old Joseph Presetifilipp of Hopatcong and Peter Kashulines, 45, of Mountain Lakes. Scott Chamberlin of Allamuchy Township, another 15-year old, came in fourth, just ahead of last year's winner, Mark Bahnuk of Hackettstown, 26, who was fifth.

Mary Christian(pictured right) of Flanders won the women's end of it, finishing in 19:06.3. She was trailed by Janine Neill of Andover, Alison Jeffs from Chester, and Bailey Ott of Pompton Lakes. Last year's female winner, Christine Scheuch, like her male counterpart winner last year, came in fifth place. Ott, at 15, was the youngest finisher on the female side.

The 12th Annual Leprechaun Leap 5K, sponsored by Picatinny Federal Credit Union and held on March 22nd, featured runners from throughout the region, many of whom wore "green" in post St. Patrick's Day honor. Proceeds from the charity race will be going to the Unit Fellowship Fund, which supports families of Morris County soldiers who are deployed overseas.

"We are thrilled to have the proceeds go to such an important group of people," said Tom Quigley, Business Development Manager for Picatinny Federal Credit Union. "Life is tough enough on these families and if we can help ease the strain even a little bit it goes a long ways in making things better."

Rounding out the Top 10 for the men were Zachary Miller, Budd Lake, Glen Oakley of Blairstown, Antonio Massa, Denville, Kevin Mulvihill, Long Valley, and Ryan Fischlein, Succasunna.

Finishing out the Top 10 for the women were Nirmala Alcapeddt, Randolph, Andrea Lovas, Oxford, Sarah Masukewicz, Flanders, Kristen Girondi, Hamburg, and Wendy Kerr, Hawthorne.

The race was presented in partnership between the ITCA and the Mount Olive Mayor's Wellness Council. The goal of the Mayors Wellness Council is to increase opportunities for New Jersey residents to participate in daily physical activity with a long-term goal of reducing personal and health care costs secondary to obesity.

Hailing from Rockaway Township, Morristown, Lincoln Park and towns around and in between, these men and women will be feted for their efforts in 2008 at The Villa in Mountain Lakes. The individuals who will be honored performed above and beyond in the fulfillment of their sworn duties for the people of Morris County, New Jersey.

The 200 Club in Morris, established in 1971, defines an act of Valor as an extraordinary event in which a person puts their own safety aside. It is an act of courage that goes above and beyond the call of duty. Very often, one's life is at risk in the process. Meritorious awards recognize individuals whose professional or volunteer activity rises above the expected norm for their profession, but does not necessarily involve an extreme safety situation.

MOUNT OLIVE TOWNSHIP, NEW JERSEY - The Mount Olive Township Recreation Department held it's 1st Annual Winter Photo Contest celebrating what makes Mount Olive Township a Great Place to Live, Work and Play!

The 1st Place, Best Over-all award winner is Kristina Ailara, who entered as an Amateur Adult with her photo titled 'Berries at Turkey Brook Park'. Besides bragging rights, Ailara won a prize packet valued at $100 with donations from Branda's Italian Grill, The Market Place & Instant Imprints.

The winners, who were honored at a reception at the Mount Olive Bar and Grill, also included Linda Spaet, Best Amateur Adult Award; Paul C. Pomel, Amateur Adult Runner Up; and Timothy Maio, Best 18 & Under.

The 2008-2009 Winter Photo Contest ran from November 20th, 2008 through March 1st, 2009. Each photo was judged based on technical quality, creativity, and the effectiveness of conveying the beauty or unique character of our town during the winter months.

The judges panel included Joe Gigli, professional photographer; Noelle Kehrley, Managing Editor of Flanders NJ News, and Dan Kehrley, President YFM Media; Megan Boyd, a Mount Olive High School photography teacher; and Jennifer and Mike Rousseau, of Our Town Magazine.

MOUNT OLIVE, NEW JERSEY - Mount Olive High School Key Club and the Mount Olive Kiwanis Club are hosting the 2009 Easter Egg Hunt on Sunday, March 29th, 2009 in Turkey Brook Park on Flanders Road, Mount Olive, New Jersey.

Event Registration begins at 12:30pm, the Egg Hunt will begin promptly at 1:00pm. Donations are $3 per child or $5 per two children. Pictures with the Easter Bunny will be available for $5 each, or $8 for two.

2009 ITCA Leprechaun Leap 5K

MOUNT OLIVE, NEW JERSEY - A run through the International Trade Center in Mount Olive on Sunday, March 22nd will be a "Leap" forward for a lucky charity. The 12th annual Leprechaun Leap 5K, sponsored by Picatinny Federal Credit Union, will benefit a non-profit organization to be determined by the Credit Union at a later date.

The International Trade Center Alliance(ITCA) together with the Mount Olive Mayor's Wellness Council will host this year's Leprechaun Leap, considered by serious - and not so serious - runners as the annual kickoff to the road race season. The goal of the Mayors Wellness Council is to increase opportunities for New Jersey residents to participate in daily physical activity with a long-term goal of reducing personal and health care costs secondary to obesity. It is the perfect match for an event where young and old alike can walk, jog or run on the flat, easy-to-traverse course.

The 5K race will begin at 1:00 pm. Mile clocks and water stops will be available along the way. This race is truly a community-minded event. Anyone is invited to participate, any age, at any level of runner. Everyone is encouraged to wear your best St. Patrick's Day costume!

On behalf of Picatinny Federal Credit Union, Business Development Manager Tom Quigley urges athletes "of all kinds" to come on out and enjoy the festivities. "We love to see all the runners, especially the ones in green," smiled Quigley. “The Beat Goes On” Cardiac Care Class

The two were taking part in a one-evening class “The Beat Goes On”, held Tuesday night hosted by Flanders Fire and Rescue, conducted by Atlantic Health.

The Mount Olive High School Percussion Ensemble under the direction of Russ Tybus has been invited to participate in the National Percussion Festival, part of the 2009 Music for All National Festival, presented by Yamaha. The festival will take place March 19-21, 2009 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Mount Olive is the first ever percussion ensemble from New Jersey to be selected to perform at this prestigious event.

NEW JERSEY - The New Jersey Jazz Society announced that the Jeanie Bryson show scheduled for Saturday, February 14th, 2009 at the The Hopewell Bistro's Starlight Room in Trenton, NJ has been canceled.

The cancellation comes with the sad news that guitarist Coleman Mellet and saxophonist Gerry Niewood were aboard the commuter Flight 3407 that crashed late Thursday about 6 miles from a Buffalo, New York. The plane crashed into a home in suburban Buffalo, tragically killing all 49 people aboard and one person on the ground.

Coleman Mellet, An accomplished jazz guitarist, and Gerry Niewood, a childhood friend of trumpeter Chuck Mangione, were flying to Buffalo for a performance with Mangione's band and the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra.

Jeanie Bryson is the daughter of songwriter Connie Bryson and the legendary jazz great Dizzy Gillespie, and Mellet's wife.

FLANDERS, NEW JERSEY – Emergency medical services providers and other public safety personnel can catch up on the latest treatments for heart-related ailments by attending a one-evening class “The Beat Goes On”. The class will be held at 7pm Tuesday, February 17th, 2009 at the Flanders Firehouse, 27 Main Street in Flanders, NJ.

“Cardiac calls are among the most common and urgent calls we respond to,” said Capt. Heather Detoro, who heads the Flanders Fire/Rescue EMS Division. “This class, taught by Atlantic Health, will help us continue to deliver state-of-the-art care to our residents.”

“The Beat Goes On” class covers the latest protocols for cardiac care. It is the first in a yearlong series of classes to be offered at Flanders Fire/Rescue on the third Tuesday night of each month. In addition, a series of other classes are planned on weekends. The first class of the weekend series will be International Trauma Life Support, taught by instructors from Saint Clare’s Hospital. Both classes are eligible for continuing education units.

NEW JERSEY - Doc South, the host of 'On the Front Porch' Oldies Radio Show, is back on the airwaves spinnin' Oldies & DooWop, MoTown, Big Band, 50's to 70's R&R, Early Country, Comedy & Novelty, Old Time Radio (OTR), and even a Polka or two. Doc has taken his oldies show National and is now available on the Internet via www.timetravelispossible.com

Doc South began his career in Radio at the tender age of four playing records for his family and friends. Doc's grandfather gave him a box of records, a record player, and a little encouragement - he fell in love immediately and has been spinnin' a show ever since.

Doc first went 'On Air' in early 1981 for WVOT in Wilson, North Carolina. Doc's show really began to take shape when reenactors from Colonial Williamsburgh, Virgina called in during the show. "I've interviewed Patrick Henry, Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, and Gowan Pamphlet" exclaimed Doc South "I used to say... 'I'm talking to you from the future using amazing inventions that make all this possible'. It wasn't long before listeners would call in remarking 'Time Travel really is possible!'

Towards the end of 1981 Doc relocated to New Jersey and joined WNTI out of Hackettstown, where he remained for 25 years broadcasting the 'Doc South Oldies Show' on Wednesday's and an occasional Friday night.

In the early 1990's he added a Saturday time slot with a similar show for WRNJ, also in Hackettstown. Doc's loyal followers demanded more, and in 2003 he began full-time with WRNJ broadcasting 'On The Front Porch' every Monday thru Friday in the afternoon.

Doc South was born Richard Michael Tomlanson, or Mike to his friends, in Elizabeth, New Jersey. He spent most of his time growing-up in Chester and now lives on a horse farm in Long Valley with his wife Sandy and their basset hound Roxie.

NJ Jazz Society 40th Pee Wee Russell Memorial Stomp

MORRISTOWN, NEW JERSEY – The New Jersey Jazz Society announced today that it will hold its 40th Annual Pee Wee Russell Memorial Stomp at the Birchwood Manor in Whippany on Sunday, March 1 from Noon to 5:00pm. The Birchwood Manor is located at 111 North Jefferson Road in Whippany, New Jersey.

This year’s Stomp offers a lineup of four bands that includes Vince Giordano & the Nighthawks, Danny Tobias Quintet, Dan Levinson and His Swing Wing, and the Warren Vaché Trio. The Stomp is named for clarinetist Charles Ellsworth Russell, much better known by his nickname, Pee Wee Russell. Russell's unique and sometimes derided approach was praised as ahead of its time, and cited by some as an early example of free jazz. His distinctive style was a mainstay in traditional jazz bands along the east coast until his death in 1969.

The Society began this annual event in 1970 and established a jazz scholarship program in the name of Pee Wee Russell at Rutgers University, one that currently provides multiple scholarships each year. Scholarships are announced and presented as are two additional awards, bestowed to a musician and non-musician. “It’s always a thrill for us to identify and award the Pee Wee Russell scholarships to the jazz students. It fulfills our mission to educate as well as present and promote jazz all around our great state,” said Andrea Tyson, president of the New Jersey Jazz Society.

Peanut Product Recalls Spreading

PetSmart announced today the voluntary recall of Grreat Choice dog biscuits because they, too, may contain the tainted ingredient. All though there have been no reports of troubled pets, buyer beware.

The FDA's recent announcement of a salmonella investigation involving peanut butter products distributed through the Peanut Corporation of America (PCA) has caused quite a stir.

As the list of products lengthens, the Food and Drug Administration is continualy updating its online list of tainted peanut products.

The number of people sickened by the salmonella outbreak linked to peanut products has increased to 485 in the U.S., with 19 cases reported in New Jersey. Infection from the outbreak may have contributed to as many as six deaths.

Salmonella bacteria can cause an infection that often produces diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after infection. The illness usually lasts four to seven days. While most people recover without medical treatment(but plenty of fluids!), infants, elderly people and those with compromised immune systems can develop severe illness that can result in death if not promptly treated with antibiotics.

Flanders Fire/Rescue Selects 2009 Officers

FLANDERS, NEW JERSEY – Command of fire and emergency medical operations in Flanders will continue under the same leadership in 2009. That’s the choice of members of the Flanders Fire Company and Rescue Squad, who recently selected their 2009 leaders.

Fire Chief Fred Detoro Jr. will remain chief of department. It will be his 10th year in the position. As chief he has overseen the department’s growth in recent years, including the addition of specialized equipment for mass decontamination and new apparatus.

Michael McDermott and Greg Widzemok will continue as assistant chiefs. Tom Shields was promoted from lieutenant to captain. Robert Uhlmann and Scott Faluotico were elected as lieutenants. Both have served in that capacity in the past.

In the Emergency Medical Services Division, members elected Heather Detoro to another term as captain. Bruce Gallagher will continue to serve as first lieutenant and Roberto Salazar will serve as second lieutenant again. Tyler Wargo also was chosen as a second lieutenant.

Joe Abrusci was re-appointed engineer. As engineer, Abrusci heads up a team of firefighters who maintain the apparatus and the equipment on those trucks.

“The re-election of so many senior people not only demonstrates the faith of the membership in the direction of the department, but provides continuity so we continue to grow with Mount Olive and assure that we can quickly provide state-of-the-art services,” said Chief Detoro. “In addition, the new officers have extensive line experience and we welcome their fresh ideas.”

The Flanders Firefighter’s Association also chose its 2009 leadership. The association runs the business end of fire and emergency medical services. That includes adhering to myriad state and federal regulations regarding personnel and homeland security rules. In charge of the association will be Kevin Dolan, who moved from vice president to president. Joe Abrusci, former president, becomes vice president.

Other association officers include Scott Faluotico, secretary; Michael Jopp, treasurer; Tano Giacchino, assistant treasurer; Tom Puder, personnel officer; and Roberto Salazar, trustee.

All will be installed at a banquet January 31st, 2009.

The Flanders Fire Company and Rescue Squad No 1 provides fire protection and emergency medical services to residents and businesses in Flanders and, through mutual aid, surrounding towns. It is made up of about 75 members, all of whom receive training in fire suppression, rescue, hazardous materials response, homeland security issues and emergency medical services. The fire company operates two fire engines, one tower truck, one heavy rescue, a brush-and-foam truck, three ambulances, a multiple-casualty unit and a mass decontamination unit.

In addition, the fire company offers public education services including lectures, demonstrations, training and a trailer that safely simulates a smoke-filled home.

Miss New Jersey Preliminary Titles

MOUNT OLIVE, NEW JERSEY – Several women from across the state vying for one of three Miss New Jersey preliminary titles and college scholarships will compete on Sunday, January 18th, 2009 at the Wyndham Garden Hotel in Mount Olive Township.

Among those competing will be 19-year old Stephanie Nunziato of Newton. A graduate of Newton High School in 2007, she now attends Rutgers University in New Brunswick where she is a sophomore with a major in Genetics and a minor in Psychology. Nunziato, Miss Newton in 2008, has never been shy about trying new things.

“I have not participated in a pageant of this extent; however, I love trying new things and I’m looking forward to the experience.” said Nunziato.

The Miss Tri-County, Miss Gateway and Miss Queen City crowns will be on the line when Stephanie Nunziato and a host of other women ages 17-24 compete for the Miss New Jersey preliminary titles. Winning a local pageant qualifies the victor to collect a scholarship and then to compete at the Miss New Jersey Pageant which will be held in June in Ocean City, New Jersey. If fortunate enough to be crowned Miss New Jersey, the winner will then compete in Las Vegas for the title of Miss America.

The competition takes place from 6-9pm at the Wyndham Garden Hotel in the International Trade Center and is open to the public. Tickets will be sold at the door.

The Miss America Organization is the single largest provider of scholarships for young ladies between 17 and 24 years of age, awarding millions of dollars annually. Each young lady, to qualify for the scholarships, must compete in a local pageant such as the Miss Gateway, Miss Tri-County and Miss Queen City Pageant.

MOUNT OLIVE, NEW JERSEY - We had an exciting night on Corey Road last evening. A limb from a nearby tree landed on the power lines causing the transformer to blow. Two live wires were knocked loose and fell to the ground causing power outages and danger.

We watched as the raw power from wires lit up the street, scorched the earth, and burned through our neighbor's metal mailbox like a knife through butter.

The indecent occurred at 10:00pm outside the business of Roger M. Casulli, DDSPA/Family Dentistry, 26 Cory Road, Flanders, New Jersey 07836. Mr. Casulli reported several equipment failures this morning that were caused by the power serge.

Mount Olive Police and Firefighters responded quickly last night and contacted Jersey Central Power and Light to turn off power and repair the wires.

JCP&L did a great job restoring the power and we were thankful to have heat and a hot shower this morning.

MOUNT OLIVE, NEW JERSEY - What a day. Approximately 13,000 township residents are without power tonight as Mount Olive and much of the state was soggy, slushy, and yes... snowy when a Nor'easter blew through the garden state.

Mount Olive Township Police report that they handled over 1,000 calls for weather related issues. The Mount Olive Twp Police Dispatch Center received 282 of those calls via 911.

Due to the heavy call volume regular patrols were supplemented by officers from the police department’s Detective Bureau, Communication Division and the Support Services Division. The combined staff responded to over 17 Disabled Motor vehicles, 8 fires, 30 weather related property damage calls, and 20 traffic accidents.

54 Garfield school district students became stranded at the Pax Amicus Castle Theater when their bus became stuck in the snow. The Budd Lake Fire Department responded to assist with the incident and was able to transport all parties to the Budd Lake Fire Department for temporary shelter.

"Our officers handled this extended weather event with incredible patience and professionalism." said Chief Mark Spitzer, Mount Olive Township Police. "The Township and County Road departments worked throughout the storm and will be staying through the night. We were eventually able to put together a fleet of four wheel drive vehicles by utilizing health department, fire marshal, and engineering SUV’s."

Mr. Richardson and his Parsippany, New Jersey Branch Sales Office staff raised nearly $23,000 for the Chapter through their annual Forget-Me-Not Days fundraising campaign and their ticket sales for two of the Chapter’s popular annual special events, the Legendary Links Golf Raffle and the Polo Classic Vacation Raffle.

“We deeply appreciate the outstanding, ongoing fundraising efforts of the Bankers Life and Casualty Company employees,” said Patricia Lombreglia, president and CEO of the Alzheimer’s Association, Greater New Jersey Chapter. “The funds they raised will help support the educational programs and support services we provide to the more than 350,000 New Jersey individuals and families coping with Alzheimer’s disease.”

Forget-Me-Not Days is a community event started by Bankers Life and Casualty Company’s Chicago-based home office, in which employees, agents, family and friends from participating branch sales offices pair up with local Alzheimer’s Association chapters to go into local communities and collect donations in exchange for forget-me-not flower seed packets. Over 60 agents and administrators from the Bankers Life and Casualty Company Parsippany, New Jersey Branch Sales Office collected donations from passersby in front of 11 local stores. This is the sixth year their office has supported Forget-Me-Not Days.

NJYS Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF

NEW JERSEY - MLS W.O.R.K.S., Major League Soccer’s community outreach initiative, announced today that it has teamed up with the New York Red Bulls and New Jersey Youth Soccer to support Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF.

The newly created program is a soccer-centered community outreach initiative that will teach young people the value of community service, educate them about global issues facing children in other parts of the world and empower them with the tools to be active global citizens making a difference in the world.

One hundred and sixty thousand youth soccer players from New Jersey Youth Soccer (NJYS) will be invited to participate in an incentive-based fundraising challenge. The challenge began in early October and will run through mid-November. Winners -- both individual and team-based -- will be recognized at a 2009 Red Bulls game and receive a variety of prizes including autographed memorabilia and a private meet-and-greet.

Every day, 25,000 children die needlessly from preventable causes – because they lack simple things like access to clean drinking water, basic childhood medical attention, or mosquito bed nets to prevent malaria.

“This is a tremendous opportunity to teach our youth about the struggles of children in other parts of the world, as well as teach them the value of community service,” said JoAnn Neale, executive vice president for Major League Soccer. “Soccer is a global game and the youth soccer players participating in this initiative will be directly contributing to the well being of a less fortunate child somewhere in the world.”

MOUNT OLIVE, NEW JERSEY - Anna Cirilli and Sabine Elsasser have long been essential to the greater Mount Olive community, each in their own way. On September 16th, they were honored for their efforts by the Mount Olive Chamber of Commerce at the organization's 14th Annual Awards Night, held at Silver Springs Farm Restaurant.

Anna Cirilli, Branch Sales Manager of Valley National Bank's two Mount Olive offices, was named the chamber's Businessperson of the Year. Sabine Elsasser, a longtime member of the chamber, was given the Tom Klecka Humanitarian Award for her extensive volunteer work.

Cirilli is an Assistant Vice President at Valley National Bank and the Branch Sales Manager of Valley's Mount Olive office located at 342 Route 46 West and the Budd Lake office located at the corner of 202 Route 46 and Mount Olive Road.

Cirilli's responsibilities at the bank include developing new commercial and consumer business through a variety of sales efforts. Known for her warm personality and commitment to personalized service, she has consistently been recognized as one of the bank's top performers over the past 25 years.

Since starting at Valley National Bank, Cirilli has managed customer accounts for hundreds of Mount Olive businesses. Early in her banking career, she was a Customer Service Representative for the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce in 1970 and in 1972 she served as the Secretary to the Manager at Commercial Trust Company. In 1973, Cirilli took some time off to raise her two daughters, Brigitte and Daniela, and then returned to the banking industry in 1983. Through a merger of Lakeland Savings Bank, Cirilli joined Valley National Bank in 1995.

Indeed, Cirilli has earned a well deserved reputation as a successful business woman who genuinely cares about her community. Presently, she serves as the corresponding secretary of the Mount Olive Chamber and is also the President of the Mount Olive Rotary Club. She resides in Green Township.

"Budd Lake has become a second home to me," said Cirilli. "I've really enjoyed every minute of my time working in this community."

Sabine Elsasser first became involved with the Mount Olive Area Chamber of Commerce while working for Dr. Brenda Rooney, Optimal Family Chiropractic, LLC in Flanders. Elsasser, recently accepted a position with the Law Office of Jonathan Stone in Washington Township, serves as Program Chair for the Chamber. Elsasser also has the distinction of having the title of "Chamber Hostess", greeting and welcoming members and guests.

As well as being a wife and mother of four, Elsasser still finds time to be actively involved in her community. She is a member of the Washington Township Municipal Alliance. She also directs a division of the Police DARE program, T.A.C. - Teens Against Crime, where youth 5th grade - 12th grade present educational puppet shows and volunteer at community events.

"This is truly an honor," said Elsasser. "I enjoy being a part of this chamber, a chamber that is warm and welcoming."

Personal Trainers for ITCA Kids Express Triathlon

MOUNT OLIVE, NEW JERSEY - When children ages 6-11 participant in this year's ITCA Kids Express Triathlon on Saturday September 27th, they will have the added benefit of "personal trainers" helping them compete.

The West Morris Area YMCA, based in Randolph, will have several trainers assisting the children on race day. This year’s race offers three different courses for three different kinds of athletes; Elite Triathlon, Tri it On Triathlon, and the Kids Express Triathlon. The Kids Express kicks off at 9:00 am.

All three Tri events start and finish at the Activities Field in the International Trade Center, with biking, running and canoeing for the adult races, and biking, running and obstacle course for the youngsters.

"The YMCA's involvement this year brings the Kids Express Triathlon to a new level of excitement," said Laura Rimmer, president of the International Trade Center Alliance. "Their trainers bring an expertise we've never had before on site for the event. Indeed, while there is competition during the race, it is more important for the kids to have fun and be more aware of their health, and the YMCA's trainers will help bring that point home."

This year's 12th Annual ITCA Triathlon is being presented by Atlantic Sports Health, a division of Atlantic Health at Morristown Memorial Hospital. Proceeds from the event go to Special Olympics New Jersey, a non-profit organization that provides athletic training and competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.

Children ages 6-11 wishing to sign up for the Kids Express Triathlon should do so as soon as possible. A limited number of openings still exist for all three competitions.

Plan Evaluator Allows Employees to Compare and Save

FLANDERS, NEW JERSEY – Absolute Resource Solutions (ARS) recently introduced a new web-based tool that allows employees of mid-market employers to compare out-of-pocket costs across their employer-sponsored health plans to select the plan that is most cost-effective for them. This new tool is not tied to any carrier and does not require the employee’s actual claims data in order to estimate out-of-pocket expenses.

Called the UBA Plan Evaluator, this web-based tool allows employees to enter basic information about their family make-up and general health to see a comparison of likely out-of-pocket costs across available health plans. 3rd Annual Mount Olive Carnival comes to a close

MOUNT OLIVE, NEW JERSEY - The 3rd Annual Mount Olive Carnival and Community weekend was a huge success. It was a pleasure to see so many smiling faces. Jill Daggon, the Mount Olive Recreation Department, and the countless number of volunteers did a wonderful job creating a strong sense of community for all.

We would like to personally thank Marco from Fresco De Noche for providing many overstuffed burritos, they were yummy. We enjoyed all day refills from Wild Bills, the extra caffeine helped to keep us going. The nice ladies at Picatinny Federal Credit Union for the beach balls that provided all day enjoyment. James Daggon for giving us a ride when the blisters on my feet were dragging me down. Dr. Brenda Rooney for helping me on my road to recovery - without it, I would have been sitting at home. Everyone at the Kiwanis Club dunk tank for making our children smile. The Cameos for giving it their all and putting on a great show. And Last, but not least, Jill Daggon for giving Dan a much needed dry shirt.

MOUNT OLIVE, NEW JERSEY - The Mount Olive Marauders 14 & Under Softball team won the Babe Ruth New Jersey State Championship on Tuesday night, by winning a double header over Hoboken.

Hoboken got off to an early 2-0 lead on a single, triple and an error. Mount Olive struck back in the bottom of the 1st inning with a bunt single from Cathy Drury after a stolen base and pass ball.

The game remained 2-1 till the bottom of the 3rd when Nicole Enslin lead off with a walk, Kelly Ashnault singled, then Shannon Haggerty also singled for bases loaded. Jeane Drury hit a grand slam that traveled over 300 feet to give Mount Olive a 5-2 lead. Mount Olive scored their final run in the bottom of the 6th and finished the season with 41 wins.

NJ Helicopter Landing Zone Safety Program

FLANDERS, NEW JERSEY – A helicopter arriving at an emergency scene to whisk away a patient whose life is on the line is one of the more dramatic moments in emergency services. The problem is that it can become rather hazardous. That’s why area firefighters and emergency medical personnel can learn how to work safely with medical helicopters at a training session sponsored by Flanders Fire Company and Rescue Squad No. 1 and hosted by the Atlantic Training Center on July 26th in Netcong.

“Helicopters add a special dimension to emergency medical transport in one of the nation’s most congested areas,” said Heather Detoro, Captain of the EMS Division of Flanders Fire/Rescue. “A person with life-threatening injuries can be at the trauma center in Morristown in just a few minutes, rather than the long time it can take fighting rush-hour traffic on our area highways. This class will help everyone decide when to call for a helicopter and how to work more smoothly with Atlantic Air One, NorthStar or any other aeromedical unit that responds.”

The class will be delivered by the flight crew of Atlantic Air One. The course gives an in-depth look at the safe operations of the CE-135 Eurocopter flown by Atlantic Air One. It also covers indications for air transport, fly-drive criteria, proper landing-zone etiquette and more. If available, attendees will get to see the Eurocopter at its home base.

EMTs will receive two elective CEUs for the class. Pre-registration is a must and there is limited availability. The class runs from 8:30 am to 11 am on Saturday, July 26th 2008 at the Atlantic Air One hanger on Love Lane in Netcong. It is open to all EMS, fire service and police personnel. ROXBURY, NEW JERSEY - Ham Radio operators will demonstrate modern capabilities during a public demo of Emergency Communications this Saturday & Sunday: June 28-29 at Horseshoe Lake Pavilion on Eyland Avenue in Succasunna, NJ.

Thousands of Ham Radio operators will be showing off their emergency capabilities this weekend. Over the past few years, the news has been full of reports of ham radio operators providing critical communications in emergencies world-wide. During Hurricane Katrina, Amateur Radio – often called "Ham radio" - was often the ONLY way people could communicate, and hundreds of volunteer "hams" traveled south to save lives and property.

When trouble is brewing, ham radio volunteers are often the first to provide critical information and communications. On the weekend of June 28-29, 2008 the public will have a chance to meet and talk with these dedicated ham radio operators and see for themselves what the Amateur Radio Service is about. Showing the newest digital and satellite capabilities, voice communications and even historical Morse code, hams from across the USA will be holding public demonstrations of emergency communications abilities.

This annual event, called "Field Day" is the climax of the week long "Amateur Radio Week" sponsored by the ARRL, the National Association for Amateur Radio. Using only emergency power supplies, ham operators will set-up emergency stations in parks, shopping malls, schools and back yards around the country. Their slogan, "When all else fails…" is more than just words to the hams as they demonstrate they can send messages in many forms without the use of contemporary phone systems, Internet or any other infrastructure that can be compromised in a crisis. More than 30,000 amateur radio operators across the country participated in last year's event.

"We hope that people will come and see for themselves, this is not your grandfather's radio anymore" said Allen Pitts, W1AGP of the ARRL. "The communications networks that ham radio people can quickly create have saved many lives in the past months when other systems failed or were overloaded."

Budd Lake family seeks four-legged solution

BUDD LAKE, NEW JERSEY - No offense to cat lovers out there, but this Budd Lake family has a need only a furry canine can fulfill, and they need your help.

Bill and Roberta Polak are raising funds on behalf of 4 Paws For Ability, a non-profit organization specializing in training and placement of service dogs for disabled children. The Polaks are committed to raising $11,000, the cost of training an autism service dog for their 7-year-old son, Will.

Will has faced more challenges in his short life than others might face in a lifetime. Born with autism, verbal apraxia, and sensory processing disorder, Will is practically non-verbal and has severe developmental delays. Children with Autism tend to wander away and are unaware of environmental dangers such as traffic, bodies of water, or the ill intentions of a stranger. Will needs a strong companion at his side trained to provide the special assistance he needs. In addition to providing constant companionship and unwavering friendship, these four-legged wonder dogs are specially trained in search and rescue skills.

Based in Xenia, Ohio, 4 Paws For Ability strives to provide service dogs to families and children that struggle with life’s daily challenges and who would otherwise be turned away by many other agencies. 4 Paws trains a variety of assistance dogs, including but not limited to seizure assistance, mobility assistance, hearing ear dogs and autism assistance dogs.

Madison High School Hosts Lacrosse All-Stars

MADISON, NEW JERSEY - Madison High School hosted the NJ US Lacrosse NJJLL and HS All-Stars last Sunday, June 8th. Five Mount Olive Lacrosse players were represented in the 2008 Gil Gibbs All-Star Games.

In a series of games, the Jamboree showcases the best of New Jersey's lacrosse players beginning with 8th grade All-Star players, boys and girls, U-15 North players vs U-15 South followed, while HS All-Stars compete on a separate field.

The Jersey Jamboree, also known as the Gil Gibbs Games, have been taking place for decades, but this is the first year, a senior from Mount Olive has been selected to play. Evan Sinicin, a senior mid-fielder who will attend Springfield College in the fall, played in the HS showcase at 1PM.

Tyler Hanson, Jimmy Pastena, and Tyler McEvoy represented the 8th Garde Mount Olive Jr. Lacrosse Team in the early morning North vs. South contest. Hanson scored the first goal of the game on an assist from McEvoy. The contest ended after a single overtime session in a tie between the North and the South.

Brandyn Merkle represented MOJLC in the U-15 North South Game. Merkle was selected to be one of two goalies to represent North New Jersey in the 2008 US Lacrosse U-15 National Youth Festival held at Golden Goal Lacrosse Complex in Lake George, NY June 20-22nd. The U-15 North South Game ended in a victory for the North with a score of 12-8. Merkle made 9 saves and only allowed 4 goals.

LEDGEWOOD, NEW JERSEY – Former World Wrestling Federation (WWF) superstar and local Ledgewood, New Jersey resident, Tito Santana has just released his debut title: Tito Santana's Tales from the Ring.

Santana had a stellar WWF career which extended more than a decade. Alongside Rick Martel as Strike Force, he won the Intercontinental and World tag-team belts. He was inducted into the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) Hall of Fame in 2004.

New Jersey Highlands Council Build Out Analysis

CHESTER, NEW JERSEY – The New Jersey Highlands Water Protection and Planning Council released a 'Build Out Analysis' today defining developable land within the Highlands region in accordance with the Regional Master Plan (RMP).

The 'Build Out Analysis' indicates that the RMP policies, when fully implemented in the Highlands Region, allow for resource protection and smart growth development that is protective of Highlands’s water quality and quantity.

The analysis conducted by the New Jersey Highlands Council relies on extensive new and existing data that will benefit from further analysis and refinement over time. “The Highlands Council will work with municipalities during the RMP conformance process as they perform local build out analyses that will better reflect local conditions that cannot be assessed at a regional level.” Eileen Swan, Executive Director, explained, “The Highlands Council is fully committed to partnering with our municipalities to refine the build out analysis by drawing upon their knowledge and experience concerning local circumstances.”

MOUNT OLIVE, NEW JERSEY - The Elite Basketball Association (EBA) of Mount Olive is hosting 'Hoops For Heart', a 3 on 3 Basketball tournament to benefit the American Heart Association.

Hoops for Heart is a double elimination tournament which guarantees 2 games per team. Age Divisions for Girls and Boys include 8-10, 10-12, 12-14, 14-16, 16-18, Over 18, and Over 40 years of age. Prizes will be given to winning teams in each division.
